SEA ISLAND COTTON
West Indian Sea Island cotton, known as gossypium bar- badense or black seed, is one of the oldest and most precious varieties in the world discovered in the early 18th century in the British West Indies. Its production is today concentrated mainly in Barbados and Jamaica, are- as that constitute a true climatic paradise. Approximately 110 million bales of cotton are produced worldwide every year, of which 2 million are extra-long staple cotton. Sea Island Cottons annual production is approximately 150 bales, making it one of the rarest and most valuable cot- tons in the world.

Sea Island stands out from all other cotton species thanks to its unique characteristics: the considerable length of the fiber ( 37 mm), the high resistance and the high per- centage of uniformity (86%). The length is added to the fineness of the fibre, as demonstrated by the micronaire, between 2.8 and 2.9 and a significant shine (reflectance level of 73).

The cultivation of Sea Island follows a particular pro- cess: the seeds are carefully selected to guarantee the highest quality and the sowing is carried out mechanical- ly and extremely regularly. Irrigation occurs mainly nat- urally through abundant rainfall. The WISICA organiza- tion (West Indian Sea Island Cotton Association) inspects every kilo of cotton produced locally and issues the Cer- tificate of Authenticity for SEA ISLAND marked yarns, guaranteeing the purity of this precious raw material.
